LG Washer IE — Water Inlet / Fill Error

Meaning

IE on an LG washer is the water inlet error: the machine did not fill to the target level within the allowed time. The most common cause is restricted water flow — a partly closed supply valve, a kinked hose, or a clogged inlet screen. Start by confirming both supply faucets are fully open and the fill hoses are not pinched behind the machine.

⚠ Safety first. Before removing hoses or inlet screens, turn off both water supply faucets and unplug the washer. Have a towel and shallow pan ready — the hoses hold standing water and will drain when you disconnect them. Never run the machine with the inlet hoses disconnected.

What the LG IE code means

LG defines IE as “water fails to fill the tub to an adequate level in a specified period.” It is a fill fault — the opposite of OE, which is a drain fault (water will not leave the machine). Note that IE and 1E are the same code: the “I” and the numeral “1” look almost identical on LG’s display, so treat 1E exactly as IE. The washer decides it has an inlet problem when its water-level (pressure) sensor does not register enough water arriving during the fill step. LG specifies a working supply pressure of roughly 14.5–116 psi; anything below that range can trip the code.

How to fix it, in order

  1. Confirm the water is on — open both hot and cold supply faucets fully (counter-clockwise). A single closed valve on a machine that mixes water will trip IE.
  2. Straighten the fill hoses — pull the washer out and check that neither hose is kinked, pinched, or crushed against the wall. Vibration slowly walks the machine backward onto its hoses.
  3. Thaw any frozen line — if it is cold, wrap the faucet in a towel soaked in hot water for a few minutes. Thaw a removed hose with water no hotter than 50 °C. Do not use an open flame.
  4. Clean the inlet screens — turn off the faucets, unplug the washer, unthread the hoses at the washer, and gently brush or rinse the small mesh screens in the inlet ports. Rust and grit here are a leading cause.
  5. Power-cycle the washer — unplug it (or trip its breaker) for a minute, restore power, and run a rinse cycle to test.
  6. Test the inlet valve — if flow is good but IE returns, the valve solenoids can be checked for continuity; a valve that will not open needs replacing.
  7. Suspect the pressure sensor last — if water is clearly filling normally and every other step checks out, the water-level sensor or its wiring is the remaining suspect. This is a control-side diagnosis best left to a technician.

Parts that may be involved

  • Inlet screen filters — the mesh guards at the hose-to-washer ports; usually cleanable, not replaced.
  • Fill hoses — replace if kinked, crushed, or split.
  • Water inlet valve assembly — the electrically controlled valve that lets water into the tub; replaced if it will not open fully.
  • Water-level (pressure) sensor — reports tub water level to the control board; a rare cause, checked last.

Difficulty and time

The first four steps are beginner-level and take 10–20 minutes with nothing more than a towel and maybe pliers to loosen the hose couplings. Testing or replacing the inlet valve is an intermediate job (about an hour, requires a multimeter and basic panel removal). Diagnosing the pressure sensor moves into technician territory.

  • Water pressure at the faucet is genuinely low throughout the house (a plumbing issue, not the washer).
  • IE returns immediately after cleaning screens and confirming full flow — pointing at the valve, sensor, or control.
  • You find water leaking from the valve body or hose connections that you cannot stop.
  • You are not comfortable using a multimeter to test the valve or sensor.

FAQ

Is IE the same as 1E on an LG washer?

Yes. The letter “I” and the number “1” render almost identically on LG’s segmented display, so the same water-inlet fault gets read as both IE and 1E. Troubleshoot them the same way.

How is IE different from OE?

IE means water is not coming in fast enough (an inlet/fill problem). OE means water will not go out (a drain problem — clogged filter, kinked drain hose, or a failing pump). If you see standing water in the tub, you have OE, not IE.

Why does IE keep coming back after I cleaned everything?

If flow is confirmed good and the screens are clean, the fault is usually the inlet valve not opening fully, or — less often — the water-level pressure sensor mis-reading the fill. Both are checked with a multimeter; if that is beyond your comfort level, it is time for a service call.
