5E (shown as 5C on some newer-display models) on a Samsung refrigerator means the fridge-compartment defrost sensor circuit has failed — an open or shorted thermistor, or the wiring feeding it, so the control board can no longer read the temperature of the evaporator on the fresh-food side. It is not the same fault as the similarly-numbered 22E/22C, which is a fridge fan error, usually from a door left open too long.   2. Check for frost buildup behind the fridge-section rear panel. If you find it, leave the unit unplugged with the door open for 3–4 hours to let it clear; laying towels on the shelves catches the meltwater, and a room-temperature fan aimed into the compartment speeds this up safely.
