What the LG OE code means

OE stands for “outlet error” — the control sensed that water was not removed during the drain cycle and stops so the tub does not overflow. Note that LG uses the same OE code on its washing machines, where it also means a drain fault; the meaning is the same but the parts differ. On a dishwasher the water leaves through a small filter, the drain pump, the drain hose, and often an air gap or garbage disposal connection at the sink. A blockage anywhere along that path throws OE. If the code appears on the very first cycle after installation, suspect the drain hose routing rather than a clog.

How to fix it, in order

1. Run a drain first — use the Cancel & Drain function (press and hold the two buttons your model assigns for it) to pump out what it can before you start.
2. Clean the filter — remove the lower rack, lift out the filter assembly in the tub floor, and rinse all food and grease away under hot water. This clears most OE errors.
3. Clear the sump and pump — bail out remaining water, then check the drain-pump area beneath the filter for glass, seeds or debris and remove anything jamming it.
4. Check the drain hose — ease the unit out and straighten any kink; a crushed or grease-clogged hose should be flushed or replaced. LG will not drain properly if the hose is kinked.
5. Clear the disposal connection — run the garbage disposal for fifteen seconds, and on a new install confirm the knockout plug was removed.
6. Clean the air gap — pop the sink-top cap and clear debris with a brush or toothpick, then flush with hot water.
7. Confirm hose routing — the drain hose should rise in a high loop toward counter height before dropping to the drain, so water cannot siphon back.
8. Reset and test — once the path is clear, cut power for a minute, then run a short cycle and confirm the tub empties.
9. Drain pump — if OE persists with a clear drain path, the drain pump or check valve is the remaining suspect, and most people call a pro at this point.
