F8 E1 on a Maytag washer (it may show as LF or Lo FL) means the washer is not detecting the correct amount of incoming water — a “long fill” fault. The most common cause is a water supply issue: a valve that is not fully open, a kinked hose, or a clogged inlet screen. Start by confirming both the hot and cold faucets behind the machine are turned all the way on.

⚠ Safety first. Turn off both water supply valves and unplug the washer before disconnecting any hose or inlet screen. Standing water can be present in the drum — the door may stay locked during an automatic drain cycle. Do not force the lid or door; let the machine finish before you work on it.

What the Maytag F8 E1 code means

The F8 E1 code appears on Whirlpool-built Maytag washers — both top-load and front-load models — when the control expects a certain water level within a set time and never sees it. Because it is a fill fault, the fix is almost always upstream of the machine: the faucets, the fill hoses, or the small mesh inlet screens where the hoses thread onto the valve. Do not confuse it with F8 E4, which is a water-level sensor / overfill fault, or with drain codes such as F9 E1 (long drain). F8 E1 is specifically about water not getting in fast enough.

How to fix it, in order

  1. Fully open both faucets — turn the hot and cold supply valves all the way on. Both must be connected and open even if you only wash cold; the control checks both.
  2. Straighten the hoses — pull the washer out and check that neither fill hose is kinked, crushed against the wall, or crossed (blue to cold, red to hot).
  3. Clean the inlet screens — shut off water, unthread the hoses at the valve, and check the mesh screens. Clean scale or grit with an old toothbrush, mild soap, and water without prying the screens out.
  4. Test water flow — aim each hose into a bucket and open the faucet. Weak flow points to the faucet, an anti-flood hose, or house pressure rather than the washer.
  5. Check the drain hose height — confirm the drain hose extends no more than 4.5” (113 mm) into the standpipe and that the standpipe top is at least 39” (99 cm) off the floor, with an air gap so it cannot siphon.
  6. Run a rinse/spin or short cycle — restore power and water and test. If the fill is now normal, the fault is cleared.
  7. Suspect the inlet valve last — if supply, hoses, and screens are all good and fill is still slow, the water inlet valve is the likely failed part and may need replacement.

Parts that may be involved

  • Water inlet valve — the dual solenoid valve that lets hot and cold into the tub; the usual failed part if supply is verified good.
  • Fill hoses — inexpensive to replace if kinked, split, or fitted with a restrictive anti-flood shutoff.
  • Inlet screens — the mesh filters at the valve inlets; clean rather than replace when clogged.
  • Main control board — rarely at fault, considered only after every water-side cause is ruled out.

Difficulty and time

Beginner-friendly for the common fixes. Checking faucets, straightening hoses, and cleaning inlet screens takes 15–30 minutes with no tools beyond a bucket and an old toothbrush. Replacing a water inlet valve is an intermediate job of about 45–60 minutes with basic hand tools and pliers, and requires unplugging the machine and shutting off the water first.

  • Water flow at the faucet is weak or absent — that is a plumbing problem, not a washer repair.
  • The inlet valve tests bad but you are not comfortable disconnecting water lines and wiring.
  • You find leaking, corrosion, or water damage around the valve or hoses.

FAQ

Is F8 E1 the same as the LF code?

Yes. On many Maytag top-load models the same long-fill fault shows as LF or Lo FL instead of F8 E1. The meaning and the checks are identical: the washer is not filling with enough water in the expected time.

Why do I need the hot water connected if I only wash in cold?

The control monitors both inlets and uses the hot valve for some cycles and cleaning routines. If the hot faucet is off or the hot hose is disconnected, the washer can log a fill fault even on a cold wash. Connect and open both.

How is F8 E1 different from F8 E4?

F8 E1 means water is not coming in fast enough (a fill/supply problem). F8 E4 points to the water-level (pressure) sensor or an overfill condition. If your machine actually fills but still faults, you are likely looking at a sensor issue rather than F8 E1.
