GE Washer E23 — Drain Pump / Drain Timeout Fault

What the GE E23 code means

GE front-load washers give the drain pump a fixed window to empty the tub. If the water level does not drop enough within that window, the control logs E23 and halts. It is a drain-system timeout, not a motor or fill failure. Excessive suds from too much detergent can also trigger it, because foam slows drainage and the control reads the tub as still full. Distinguish it from E22 (a related drain/water-level condition) and E31 (a pressure/water-level sensor fault) — E23 specifically means the water would not leave in time.

3. Check the drain hose — pull the washer out and confirm the hose is not kinked. Detach it and flush it; clear any sock or lint plug.
4. Verify the standpipe — make sure the house drain itself is not clogged and the hose is not pushed so far in that it seals. GE calls for the discharge height between 30” and 8 ft above the floor.
5. Cut back the detergent — use only HE detergent and the recommended dose; run a drain/rinse-and-spin to clear residual suds.
6. Inspect the pump impeller — with power off, check the impeller behind the filter for a coin or wrapped fabric and free it by hand.
7. Test a drain cycle — restore power and run Drain & Spin. If water clears normally, the fault is resolved.
8. Replace the drain pump last — if the path is clear but the pump is silent or humming without moving water, the pump (or its wiring) is the failed part.

FAQ

Can too much detergent cause E23?

Yes. Excess or non-HE detergent produces suds that drain slowly, so the pump cannot clear the tub in time and the control flags E23. Run a rinse-and-spin, then switch to the recommended HE dose to prevent it recurring.

Where is the drain pump filter on a GE front-load washer?

It is behind a small access panel on the lower front of the machine. Open the panel, put a shallow pan underneath, and slowly unscrew the filter cap to release the trapped water before pulling out the filter to clean it.
